mayor cowan adds WORD FOR AMATEUR PLAY AT VICTORIA; 1ues Statement Regarding | Diana of the Follies, Which j Opens Tonight I Mayor Jams H. Cowan yesterday 1s .'.1 the following statement regarding : p forthcoming play, "Diana of the lilies”: Wilmington has many things the old storic city can boast of. Tradition ossesses many triumphs, the present many more, and, no doubt, the future will unfold still others. Included in he list is the literary and draamtic Lhility of the people and the truth of ■his will be plainly and, also, brilliant ly exemplified tomorrow night when the sparkling musical comedy, 'Diana of the Follies,’ the product of the in tellect of two talented Wilmingtonians, Misses Bessie and Florence Burk heimer, will be offered to the amuse ment loving public of this city. But not only is it Wilmingtonian in crea tion but it will be Wilmingtonian in production and cast. Truly. it will again illustrate, and in glorious way, 'Made in Wilmington,' which will nat urally appeal to the pride of every citizen. “But these are not all of the good things. The performance, or perform ances, because so great is the demand (or seats that it will be offered twice, tomorrow and Saturday at the Victo ria theater, will be as a big benefit tor the Defiance chapter of the Daugh ters of the American Revolution, that splendid band of women that is doing s0 much to preserve history, that it nay be an inspiration to the present nd those, who follow afterwards. So he event and the cause are stirring niite a furore and indications are that when the curtain ascends tomorrow light on the first act a 'standing room ,nly' audience will be in evidence. "And, by the way of parenthesis, it * well to note that , the first act will veal ‘behind the scenes' at the fa nous Follies theater. Now, if there n anything that appeals to the curi osity of folks it is to get a glimpse behind the scenes'; to know just what wage folks do when the curtain is iown and when they are getting ready ■ o deport themselves behind the foot i°hts This particular act will show •'all in most fascinating manner. Just ow the charming girlies make-up will < e vividly depicted. Of course, it has ,,oen worked into the plot and action f the bright comedy, so that there vill not be a dull moment and so that interest may not flag. ‘Behind the scenes' will inaugurate the music, the on and the dancing, and the act will w crowded with the brightest of num bers. including novel dances and uu • o-the-second songs. A wealth of cos : ornery will heighten the picture while Woe light and other effects will add im mense charm. . ! “The other scenes will be just as im portant and just as fascinating, all ■ ing to make one of the best produc es' Wilmington has ever had the •Measure and privilege of realizing. It mill be a real professional production ; performance. It goes without say mg that the music show is a real pro smonal in the writing and creation, i ..cause the Misses Burkheimer. have enviable and wide reputation for i he brilliancy of their stage work. This ;s a matter of considerable pride to , opte of this city and these young la ms are Wilmingtonians and are proud ,f their old home town. “The, cast of ‘Diana of the Follies* Will be made up of Wilmington’s best i,,lent, which assures its success front ■ i,p standpoint of performance, and the is;, together with the various oho ■ uses, has been faithfully and efii icntlv coached by the Misses Burlc • imer.
